San Juan, 23 and 24 June
According to the board, Puerto de la Cruz marks San Juan on the night of 23 and 24 June with bonfires on the shore and a tradition of bathing goats at the fishing dock. The town's Playa Jardín complex, with Playa Chica and Punta Brava, is on the Blue Flag list, and the Lago Martiánez complex has eight pools. See Puerto de la Cruz. The board also lists the Virgen del Carmen festival in summer. For the month before, see Tenerife in May.
Weather by area
- South. Drier and sunnier than the north, with higher temperatures that peak in summer. Costa Adeje has about 300 sunny days a year; see Costa Adeje.
- North. Trade winds bring moisture and cloud to a cooler, greener coast.
- Teide. Summer sun is strong at altitude: the board advises sunscreen and a hat. Bring water or an isotonic drink and snacks.
What to do
- Beach and sea. The south coast beaches are in use all year, and swimming is easiest in the dry months. Boat trips run all year: see Tenerife boat trips.
- Water parks. Siam Park tickets and Loro Parque tickets.
- El Caletón. The Garachico pools are especially popular in summer; the board warns that the sea can be rough, so watch the waves. See Garachico.
- Teide early. The cable car takes about 8 minutes to 3,555 m; tickets are online only. See Teide cable car.
- Los Gigantes. The board says July and August are hotter and suit water sports; June is the lead-in. See Los Gigantes.
June in the mountains and villages
Vilaflor sits at about 1,400 m, is cooler and drier than the coast and has a yearly range of roughly 10 to 20 °C, which makes it a comfortable stop in a warm month; see Vilaflor. Garachico has summer highs of 23 to 25 °C and lows of 19 to 21 °C. The Palmetum is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 and the Botanical Garden in Puerto de la Cruz from 9:00 to 18:00, so both fit a cooler morning.
Where to stay in June
The south is the safer pick for sun: see where to stay in Costa Adeje and where to stay in Los Cristianos. For San Juan in the north, stay in Puerto de la Cruz. Compare rates by date in the Booking box.
Mistakes to avoid
- Hiking at altitude without sun protection. The park's summer sun is strong.
- Swimming in the El Caletón pools without checking the waves.
- Booking the north for guaranteed sun; the south has more sun hours.
