Carnival in February
The Santa Cruz carnival is a Festivity of International Tourist Interest, and the Burial of the Sardine closes it on Ash Wednesday. The board's page describes the 2025 edition, which ran from 28 February to 9 March; the 2027 programme follows the same logic, with Ash Wednesday on 10 February. The full structure, the parades and the practical details are in Tenerife Carnival. Puerto de la Cruz lists its own carnival in February.
If you travel in carnival weeks, the main areas are the avenues and squares of central Santa Cruz, so compare hotels by date; Santa Cruz de Tenerife covers the city.
Almond blossom and hill villages
The board lists almond blossom in Santiago del Teide from late January to February and in Vilaflor in January and February. Vilaflor sits at about 1,400 m, is cooler and drier than the coast, and has cold nights in winter; see Vilaflor.
What else to do in February
- Beaches in the south. Adeje lists 14 beaches that can be swum all year, with a yearly average of about 24 °C; see Costa Adeje.
- Teide. Peaks are often snow-covered in winter. Cable car tickets are online only and can be changed free until 6:00 pm the day before; see Teide cable car.
- Sea trips. The Los Gigantes period from November to May is the board's best; the common dolphin is seen mostly in winter, and the sperm whale mostly in spring. See whale watching in Tenerife.
- Gardens. The Palmetum's Salvia broussonetii flowers from late winter into early spring; see Palmetum.
Weather by area
- The south is drier and sunnier than the north.
- The north is cooler, greener and moister because the trade winds push cloud against the mountains.
- The mountains have typical mountain weather. Bring a jacket and rain layer for Teide.
Mistakes to avoid
- Leaving the hotel search to the last minute in carnival weeks. Rates depend on the date, so compare in the Booking box.
- Expecting beach weather in the north. The listed minimum is 15 °C, the second lowest of the year.
- Assuming a museum is open on carnival Tuesday: MUNA is closed on Carnival Tuesday.
