What April offers

  • Spring flowers. The red bugloss (tajinaste rojo) in Teide National Park blooms in spring. Nature fans can see it on the walks from El Portillo and Cañada Blanca; see Roques de García.
  • Salvia broussonetii. A Tenerife endemic near the Palmetum's entrance, which flowers from late winter into early spring.
  • Whales. The sperm whale is mostly seen in spring; pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins are present all year. The Los Gigantes best period, November to May, includes April.
  • Walks. The weather is steadier for the Barranco del Infierno and the park trails: Arenas Negras (2 to 2.5 hours), La Fortaleza (3.5 hours) and Risco Verde (3 hours).

A four-part April plan

Practical notes

  • Teide permit. Apply one to two months ahead at tenerifeon.es for the summit path; the cable car is booked separately online. See Teide cable car.
  • Closures. The La Orotava Botanical Garden is closed on Good Friday, and Easter falls in March or April depending on the year.
  • Weather by area. The south is drier and sunnier, the north greener. The trade winds make a blanket of cloud between 500 and 1,500 m on the north side, which climbers see from below, walk through and then see from above.

Teide in April

The national park covers about 19,000 hectares. Official guided walks run all year except 1 and 6 January and 25 December and are booked at the park office on weekdays between 9:00 and 14:00. The Altavista refuge at 3,270 m allows one-night stays at 10 to 20 euros, booked online, which some visitors use for an early climb. See Teide National Park. For the month before, see Tenerife in May.

Where to stay in April

Choose by activity: the south coast for beaches and boats, Puerto de la Cruz for the north and Loro Parque. Compare areas in where to stay in Tenerife and rates by date in the Booking box.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming April means the same as summer: highs of 23 °C are 5 degrees below August.
  • Skipping the sea trip because of the season: whale watching runs in any month.
  • Booking Teide on the day. The cable car sells online only and places are limited.
