What October feels like
- South coast. The south is the drier and sunnier side of the island, with more sun hours and higher temperatures than the north (tourist board). Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos stay the easiest bases for beach days; see where to stay in Tenerife.
- North coast. The trade winds bring moisture and cloud to the north, which is cooler and greener. Puerto de la Cruz stays between 15 and 22 °C all year according to the board.
- Mountain. Teide National Park has typical mountain weather: it changes quickly, so pack warm layers and a rain jacket in any season.
- Sea trips. The Los Gigantes area is best from November to May according to the board, so October is the start of its calmer season, with boats running all year.
What to do in October
- Boats and whales. Pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins live off Tenerife all year, so cruises run in October. The Atlantic spotted dolphin is seen mostly from autumn to late spring; see whale watching in Tenerife and Tenerife boat trips.
- Teide. The park covers about 19,000 hectares at around 2,000 m. The cable car reaches 3,555 m in about 8 minutes, and the summit path needs a free permit that you apply for one to two months ahead at tenerifeon.es. Details are in the Teide cable car and Teide National Park pages.
- Gardens. The Palmetum in Santa Cruz is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 and the La Orotava Botanical Garden from 9:00 to 18:00; see Palmetum.
- Walks. The Barranco del Infierno needs an online booking, with a limit of 300 walkers a day.
- Parks. Siam Park and Loro Parque have their own pages: Siam Park tickets and Loro Parque tickets.
Packing and booking for October
- Bring swimwear and sun cream for the south, a light jacket for the evening and for the north, and warm layers for Teide.
- Sea days are most reliable in the south. If your trip is the first half of the month, expect results close to the September pattern, with more sun; later in the month, closer to November.
- Book accommodation by area, not just by price: the south is drier, the north greener. Compare hotels by date in the Booking box.
Mistakes to avoid
- Packing for the beach only. Teide at 3,555 m is far colder than the coast, and snow can fall in winter on the peaks.
- Booking the north for guaranteed sun. The board describes the north as moister and cloudier, so choose the south for beach days.
- Leaving the Teide summit permit late. The board advises applying one to two months ahead.
