Weather by area

  • South. Drier and sunnier, with more sun hours than the north. For a beach week, Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos are the bases; see where to stay in Costa Adeje and where to stay in Los Cristianos.
  • North. Cooler and greener with moderate rainfall. Puerto de la Cruz stays between 15 and 22 °C all year.
  • Mountain. The peaks of Las Cañadas del Teide are often covered in snow in winter, and the park has typical subalpine weather. Wear proper footwear. The board advises warm clothes and a rain jacket in any season.
  • Sea. For boat trips from Los Gigantes, the board's best period runs from November to May; see Los Gigantes.

Ideas for a December week

  1. A day on the south coast beaches and promenade.
  2. A boat trip: the common dolphin is seen mostly in winter and the pilot whale all year; see Tenerife boat trips.
  3. A Teide day with the cable car (3,555 m in about 8 minutes), keeping the 6:00 pm cancellation deadline in mind: you can change the date free until 6:00 pm the day before.
  4. A concert at the Auditorio de Tenerife, designed by Santiago Calatrava, or a walk through Santa Cruz.
  5. A trip to the north: Puerto de la Cruz and Garachico.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Planning a museum visit on 24, 25 or 31 December or 1 January without checking the closures above.
  • Expecting a beach day in the north. The north is the cooler, cloudier side.
  • Booking without comparing dates. Rates depend on the date, so compare accommodation by date in the Booking box.
