How apartments are rated

Tenerife's tourist board rates apartments in "keys" (1, 2 or 3) and in stars (3, 4 or 5), and lets you filter its listings by area: Isla Baja, North, Santa Cruz-La Laguna and South. It also marks apartments as "accessible" or "practicable" for guests with reduced mobility, classified by Sinpromi, the island's society for people with disabilities. The two words are not the same: "accessible" meets the functional requirements for an autonomous visit, while "practicable" does not meet them all but allows a visit with someone's help. Ask the property for details if you travel with a wheelchair.

South coast: Costa Adeje, Las Américas, Los Cristianos

The south has the largest choice. In Costa Adeje, Playaolid is 800 m from the sea, which suits a walker, a real distance each way. Sunset Bay Club and Hilton Vacation Club Sunset Harbour are a few minutes on foot from Torviscas or Fañabé, and Sol Sun Beach opens straight onto the Fañabé promenade. Wyndham Residences and Ramada Residences by Wyndham are also listed in Costa Adeje, the latter with gardens and play areas. In Playa de las Américas, Coral Compostela Beach is on the sand, and Parque Santiago IV is on the Golden Mile seafront. In Los Cristianos, HG Tenerife Sur is 500 m from the beach. West coast: Los Gigantes

Apartamentos El Sombrero in Los Gigantes has sea views, large garden areas and two pools, one for children, so it suits a family. Read Los Gigantes before you choose, as it is a cliff village rather than a beach resort.

North coast: Puerto de la Cruz

Apartamentos Teneguía and GF Noelia are within 100 to 300 m of Playa Jardín, the black-sand town beach, and Teneguía is 200 m from the center. Apartamentos Park Plaza is next to Plaza del Charco. Size and layout

Coral Los Alisios offers one- and two-bedroom apartments from 70 m², and Apartamentos Mar-Ola Park has 72 apartments, which is a small complex. When you compare listings, check the number of bedrooms, the distance to the beach and the pool before the price.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by the name of a resort alone. The tourist board lists Playaolid in Costa Adeje at 800 m from the beach, while others are on the promenade.
